The Department of the Environment is to meet the National Safety Council this week to discuss water safety measures after the drowning 10 days ago of three teenagers at Strandhill beach in Co Sligo.

Mr Robert Molloy, Minister of State, told Mr John Perry (FG, Sligo Leitrim) that water safety was a matter for local authorities but he was conducting a review to strengthen and reorganise the existing structures to make the best available use of resources. Mr Perry had demanded the establishment of a national register of dangerous beaches around the country. "We must highlight the dangers of these beaches regardless of the cost," he said.
