Waterford is to join Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Belfast in hosting a marathon after details of the inaugural race were announced at the weekend. The race, which will be named the Waterford Viking Marathon in recognition of the city’s origins, will take place on June 30th and is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants.
The route of the marathon, which will begin at The Mall in the city centre and continue out to Tramore before finishing at the Regional Sports Centre, was unveiled at the weekend.
Waterford Viking Marathon chairman Des Whelan said the event would bring a welcome boost to retailers and accommodation providers in the city.
He added that excess funds from the running of the event would be donated to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland in Waterford and the Waterford Hospice.
