The RUC yesterday discovered weapons close to Portadown town centre, Co Armagh. They were found during a planned search of business premises in the Tandragee Road area. No arrests were made.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man has been admitted to hospital after receiving two gunshot wounds to his right leg in what the RUC described as a "paramilitary-style punishment shooting". The man was discovered in an alley adjacent to Greenmount Place, off York Road, north Belfast, shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday.

The RUC has confirmed that a suspicious object recovered in Whitehouse, Newtownabbey, north Belfast, yesterday consisted of component parts of an explosive device. The object was found at the rear of a disused petrol station and contained a timer, a battery and a substance which has been sent for forensic analysis.

The Belfast-Larne railway line, which had been closed as a result of an alert, was reopened last night.
