INTENDING AIRLINE passengers travelling to parts of Continental Europe and England have been advised to check with their carriers this morning.
A number of British Airways flights were forced to divert to Shannon airport yesterday after snow at London’s Heathrow prevented them from landing.
However, weather conditions at home are unlikely to match those abroad, Met Éireann said.
While cloud will persist with rain or drizzle today, temperatures are expected to rise to between seven and 10 degrees, with conditions brightening during the week.
The poor weather in Britain, where there were unusually large snowfalls in the south and east of England, was a boon for hotels around Shannon, with hundreds of passengers from the US to London diverted to Shannon and brought to local hotels for the night.
Diverted flights included those from Washington, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Atlanta and Miami. Some flights were able to continue their journey later in the day, but about 500 passengers remained in the area overnight.
Aer Lingus flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick airports between Dublin, Shannon, Cork and Belfast were affected by conditions in Britain. Ryanair cancelled a flight to Newcastle.
