Temperatures will plummet to -5 degrees tonight with a sharp ground frost and a risk of sleet and snow, according to Met Éireann.

The respite from rain will come to an end tonight with more unsettled weather on the way.

Most parts of the country can expect a dry, bright day today and while temperatures will remain low at five to seven degrees, it won’t feel as cold as it has in recent days, Met Éireann forecaster Gerry Scully said.

Conditions will change overnight with air temperatures falling as low as -5 degrees and sharp frosts affecting most of the country.

Winds will pick up in western areas late in the night and push a rain belt across the country tomorrow morning that could fall as sleet or snow for a while.

It will be very cold initially tomorrow but temperatures could reach 11-12 degrees in the south. It will stay colder in Ulster with temperatures possibly no higher than three degrees during the day.

The rain will be “heavy enough”, but there will be a clearance spreading across all areas tomorrow night, Mr Scully said. “The rains will be heavy, but short in duration . . . But in areas that have been flooded, they’re not going to help matters.”

Indications for Wednesday and Thursday are for some heavy showers of rain or hail.
