Australian Mark Webber is front-runner to replace Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya at Williams next year, according to the team's technical director Sam Michael.

Michael, also an Australian, was asked at the Canadian Grand Prix whether the Jaguar driver was the favourite candidate.

"Yes," he replied. "He has the right mentality, he's got an aggressive attitude in a positive sense," added Michael.

"He seems like a good team player. He's been successful and very fast and talented in every car that he's ever driven from sportscars to Formula Ford to Formula One.

"The majority of the time, with the exception of today, he's definitely out-performing his team mate so it looks like a positive step."

Webber has a contract with Jaguar for next year, but it is believed to be subject to performance clauses, and is managed by Renault boss Flavio Briatore.

The Australian has also been linked to Renault and Toyota and said earlier this week that he had a tough decision to make about his future.

Montoya is moving to McLaren in 2005.

Williams, who may also need to find a replacement for Germany's Ralf Schumacher, have also been talking to their former champion Jacques Villeneuve.

The Canadian is keen to make a comeback after losing his place at BAR last year and has had at least two recent discussions with the team.

"We had a meeting with Jacques just to get his latest position on what he wanted out of Formula One and whether he could fit into our future plans," said Michael.

"There's nothing guaranteed but we might consider...a test later in the year, but nothing has been agreed yet.
