An interactive online atlas that maps the birthplaces of famous Irish scientists and locations of scientific discoveries has been launched.
The Atlas of Ingenious Ireland website highlights sites of scientific interest around the country, such as the world’s oldest fossilised footprints on Valentia Island, Co Kerry, and Broome Bridge, Co Dublin, where Sir William Rowan Hamilton invented a new type of algebra in 1843.
It is being introduced as part of the Dublin City of Science 2012 programme.
The atlas was created by journalist Mary Mulvihill, who also designs tours – with a scientific twist – of Dublin and other areas. “We hope the atlas encourages people to . . . discover that Ireland has a rich scientific heritage,” she said.
