The Boyle Medal celebrates excellence in scientific research.

Those offering nominations for the 2001 RDS/Irish Times Boyle Medal can find information and application forms on a website designed to assist overseas applicants.

The 2001 award programme is open only to Irish-born researchers who work outside the island of Ireland and whose scientific efforts have earned them international recognition. Originally devised by the RDS, the Boyle Medal has been presented for the past century to celebrate excellence in scientific research.

The website provides details about the medal, its history and the distinguished panel of previous Boyle Laureates. The RDS and The Irish Times joined in 1999 to relaunch the medal and formally establish it as a biennial award.

The award is given alternately to an Irish-based researcher and an Irish-born researcher based abroad. The 2001 programme is in recognition of the many fine Irish researchers who have gone abroad. Often recognised overseas for their important contributions to science, the significance of the work done by these fine scientists too often remains unknown to the Irish public.

Scientists may not apply directly themselves but must be nominated. The rules and procedures are given on the website along with an application form. The site is available at: http:// www.ireland.com/newspaper/ science/boyle.htm
