Gardaí have opened a murder investigation after Robert Sheehan (21) died in hospital this afternoon.

Mr Sheehan was smoking a cigarette in the car park of Bunratty Castle Hotel and Spa, Co Clare, at 3.40am yesterday when a car pulled up in front of him and two occupants wounded him in the head and body.

Detectives are following several lines of inquiry, including a possible link to a dispute between a number of parties that occurred in Moyross, Limerick, last July. Two men received stab wounds during the row.

Two men, who are aged in their 20s, were arrested yesterday morning in Cork city in connection with the incident. They remain in custody at Mayfield and Gurranabraher Garda Stations under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

Mr Sheehan was jailed in 2007 after two children were burned in a petrol car-bombing. The shooting is not thought to be linked to that incident.

Gardaí are examining a handgun found near the hotel yesterday.
