A week-long anti-ageism campaign starts today.
Say No To Ageism week is run by the Equality Authority, the Health Service Executive and the National Council on Ageing and Older People. It involves a billboard campaign and radio advertising with the catchline "age is a label that doesn't always fit".
The campaign will focus on discrimination against older people in the provision of goods and services, in job advertisements, promotions and working conditions.
Almost one in 10 cases handled by the Equality Authority under the Employment Equality Acts in 2003 was taken on ageism grounds; 9 per cent of the case files under the Equal Status Act related to age discrimination.
