With good weather forecast for the weekend it is expected that traffic to and from urban areas and leisure resorts will be particularly heavy this afternoon and again on Sunday evening.

With the summer holiday peak near, Aer Rianta is advising departing air passengers from Dublin, Cork and Shannon to leave home earlier than usual to be sure of catching flights.

The airport company said the extra time would enable passengers to check in for their flights "in comfort and ease and will ensure a pleasant start to their journey."

AA Roadwatch is advising motorists in Dublin that the communications company ESAT will be carrying out major ducting works in the city centre over the weekend. This will cause delays on Lincoln Place, Sandwith Street, Creighton Street, City Quay, Georges Street, Leinster Street, Nassau Street, Suffolk Street, College Green, Westmoreland Street, Fleet Street, D'Olier Street, and Burgh Quay.

Also in Dublin, there will be road maintenance work on Dartry Road. Traffic from Milltown will be diverted at Orwell Park to Orwell Road and Rathgar Road. The 14A bus will be diverted down Orwell Road from the Churchtown Road (Lower) junction.

Roundabout construction will continue at Milltown Bridge and Maple Road, with traffic reduced to a single lane and temporary lights in operation.

There will be gas works on the out-of-city side of the Blackrock bypass, between Newtown Avenue and Monkstown Road. Road repairs will be taking place at Rochestown Park in Dun Laoghaire, with single-lane traffic there also, and watermains are being repaired on Glenageary Road, near the Glenageary roundabout. There will be drainage works on Brighton Road in Foxrock.

Across the city in the Phoenix Park, the Upper Glen Road will be closed for repairs from the junction of the Furze and Survey roads to the junction of St Mary's and Serpentine roads.

At Donnybrook, Beaver Row will remain closed to traffic for the coming week and drivers wishing to travel via Donnybrook to Clonskeagh should use either Eglinton road or Belmont avenue.

All westbound traffic out of the city on the Lucan bypass between the Deadman's Inn and the Fonthill junction will be subject to a contra-flow system this weekend.

As part of improvement works on the N4 Lucan road, eastbound traffic is being diverted to the new northern ramp of the Quarryvale interchange. This will continue until September next.

In the south county Dublin area Barton Road East, between Ballinteer Avenue and Beaumont Avenue, will be closed this weekend, while diversions will be in place eastbound, via Nutgrove Way, Churchtown Road and Ballinteer Road, and westbound via Ballinteer Road, Broadford.

In north county Dublin major roadworks are taking place in connection with the Balbriggan bypass on the N1, at the Five Roads, approximately five miles south of Balbriggan. Roadworks on the eastbound carriageway mean that the bus lane at St Loman's hospital is closed and a contraflow is in place. Works are also continuing on the median M50 to the Lucan interchange. These will continue until December next.

In Co Meath, roadworks continue on the N3, two miles on the Dublin side of Dunshaughlin, with delays of up to a half hour at peak times, while in Co Wicklow roadworks continue in Rathnew.

In Co Kildare pipelaying is taking place in Leixlip and traffic around the village is expected to be heavy, while gas works continue on the Clane road, to the Sallins side of Clane village. Motorists are advised to take an alternative route.

In Cork, resurfacing work is continuing on the Ballyvourney to Kerry county-bound route, with delays expected for the next five weeks. A contra-flow is in place there also.

In Cork city, Wilton Road is being resurfaced while work is also taking place at Dennehys Cross and on the South City Link Road. There is no entry to Liberty Street from North Main Street or Castle Street, while roadworks are also taking place at Washington Street, with single-lane traffic in both directions.

In Donegal, extensive improvement works are taking place on Main Street, Ballybofey, and will continue to the end of next month.

The arts festival is taking place in Galway city, so traffic is expected to be heavy there throughout the week, especially at Woodquay and in the city centre.

There will be single-lane traffic on the eastbound carriageway of the Athlone bypass, with diversions at interchanges.
