A WET and windy weekend is on the cards but those praying for the amounts of snow we saw this time last year are going to have to wait.

Met Éireann said there was a chance of “wintery precipitation” tonight and tomorrow but it would only be on higher ground in northwestern areas.

Those seeking some early Christmas cheer will have to do it through the combination of heavy showers and breezy conditions that have been forecast for most of the country.

Temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees are expected across the country today with westerly winds and the brunt of the rain falling on Connacht, Munster and Ulster.

Colder conditions are expected tomorrow with daytime temperatures of between 4 and 8 degrees forecast, with further showers in the north and west.

As a result of the wet and windy conditions, Eircom last night said it was experiencing an increased number of faults on its network.

A total of 5,000 faults had been reported last night with Donegal, Mayo, Cork, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford worst affected.

For anyone seeking to get out into the rain, a number of musical and outdoor events are taking place across the State. In Dublin, a concert to raise funds to build a sports park at Messines, Belgium, honouring the Christmas truce of the first World War, takes place at Kimmage Manor church today.
