Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Heritage Jimmy Deenihan will attend this formal State event in Drogheda, Co Louth on Sunday.

Drogheda during the Famine years was the second largest port of departure for over a million people who were forced to emigrate, according to the local authorities.

Some went only as far as Britain, while others who travelled on from there to the US became known as ‘two boaters’. In 1847 alone, 70,000 people left Ireland on steam ships from Drogheda Port, mainly bound for Liverpool.

Tomorrow’s National Famine Commemoration takes place at North Quay at 2.30pm.

Members of the local community will perform music, readings and prayers, and there will also be wreath-laying ceremonies and military honours. All are welcome to attend.

Inishbofin Half Marathon

A 13.1-mile run or walk in the picturesque surroundings of Inishbofin tomorrow will see participants start in pairs at 15-second intervals due to the narrow roads.
