Louth:
Two beaches covered by lifeguards: Templetown and Clogherhead, the former weekends only June to August, the latter weekdays also July and August.
Dangerous: Omeath, Carlingford, Blackrock Beach and Greenore.
Meath:
Two beaches, Laytown and Bettystown, covered by lifeguards for the first time this summer. Weekends only June-August.
Fingal:
Sixty lifeguards employed, operating weekends and possibly weekdays, depending on the weather, in June and all week in July and August. Beaches covered: Balbriggan, Skerries, Loughshinney, Rush north, Rush south, Portrane, Tower Bay, Donabate, Malahide, Portmarnock, Sutton (Burrow Road) and Howth (Claremont Beach).
Dangerous: Burrow Road, Sutton and Claremont Beach, Howth, both unsafe at certain times.
Dublin Corporation:
Five full-time lifeguards operating at Dollymount Strand from June to August. No lifeguards at Sandymount Strand, where bathing is discouraged.
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown:
Killiney and Seapoint, Blackrock have full-time lifeguard cover for three months, starting June. Corbawn, Shankill weekends only. No unsafe areas, although swimming at the Forty Foot is discouraged.
Wicklow:
Arklow, Bray, Brittas Bay, Greystones and Wicklow town have full-time lifeguard cover from June to August. No unsafe beaches, although parts of Brittas are signposted for undercurrents and large swells.
Wexford:
Duncannon, Rosslare Strand, Curracloe and Courtown: weekend cover until the end of June; full-time July and August. Ballymoney and Morriscastle weekends only, although the latter may be extended to full-time. Twenty lifeguards employed.
Dangerous: Cairnivan on south coast, part of Cahore, part of Duncannon and Big Burrow near Grange Strand.
Waterford:
Six lifeguards in Tramore weekends only until June 27th. Twelve lifeguards in Dunmore, Clonea and Ardmore, full-time between June 27th and August 31st. No unsafe areas except Bunmahon where a beach-guards' club is based.
Cork:
Up to 20 lifeguards employed at Youghal, Garryvoe, Garretstown, Inchidowney, Ownahincha and Barley Cove, covering weekends from May 30th until the end of June. Fulltime July and August.
Dangerous: Long Strand at Castlefreke.
Kerry:
Up to 30 lifeguards employed, full-time or parttime depending on availability, from June to August for 10 beaches.
Dangerous: Couminole and Clogher in the west; and Glen Beech in St Finian's Bay in the south.
Clare:
Lahinch, Kilkee, Fanore and Spanish Point have lifeguards on weekends during June. Those four beaches and 10 others have lifeguards every day in July, August and possibly September, depending on weather. Twentyseven lifeguards employed.
Dangerous: Tra Leathin, near Doolin; Blue Pool, near Bunbeg.
Galway:
Twenty-five beach guards are employed fulltime from July to August for beaches in the city and 10 in the county. Lifeguard cover may be extended to June at Lady's Beach, Blackrock, Silver Strand, Tracht Kinvara, Carraroe and Spiddal Road, depending on weather. No beaches in the city or county deemed hazardous.
Mayo:
Seven beaches with full-time lifeguards, including two on Achill Island and one at Westport. Eighteen lifeguards employed.
Dangerous: Dookinella and Keel.
Sligo:
Enniscrone, Mullaghmore and Rosses Point with full-time lifeguards from May 30th to the end of August. Streedagh and Dunmoran staffed part-time. Thirteen lifeguards employed.
Dangerous: Strandhill, Mermaid's Cove in north Sligo and parts of Streedagh.
Leitrim:
No designated coastal bathing areas and no lifeguards.
Donegal:
Bundoran has four full-time lifeguards, Rossnowlagh three. Another 22 lifeguards work 11 other beaches.
Dangerous: Five Fingers Strand, near Mallon.
