A 36-year-old mother of two was yesterday remanded on bail after she was charged with the manslaughter of her husband, who died from a stab wound following an incident at the couple's rented home in Cork on New Year's Eve last.
Dilorom Sulaymanova, an Uzbek national, appeared at Cork District Court yesterday charged with unlawfully killing her husband, Abduazim Sulaymanov, at their home at Pinewood, Ballinlough Road, Cork, on December 31st.
Mr Sulaymanov (39), was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where he died on January 6th.
Det Sgt Declan O'Sullivan gave evidence yesterday of arresting Ms Sulaymanova outside Anglesea Street courthouse in Cork.
He said that in reply to the manslaughter charge Ms Sulaymanova said: "I did it because I was protecting my children and my mother and because of the continuous beatings. I was in shock when I did it."
Insp Ger O'Mahony said Ms Sulaymanova was already on bail on a charge of assault causing serious harm to the deceased and he said gardaí were seeking a remand on bail on the same terms for the manslaughter charge.
Gardaí were still awaiting instructions from the DPP regarding the earlier charge and he asked to have Ms Sulaymanova remanded on bail to appear again at Cork District Court on June 13th.
Ms Sulaymanova's solicitor, Eddie Burke, said his client was consenting to the remand. Judge Uinsinn MacGruairc granted Ms Sulaymanov free legal aid.
He remanded her on bail to appear in court again on June 13th and made it a condition that she sign on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Anglesea Street Garda station, surrender her travel documents and notify gardaí of any change of address.
