Wildfires swept through the Gard region of southern France near Nimes today, destroying more than 700 hectares (1,700 acres) of scrub and forcing dozens of people from their homes, officials said.
Interior Minister Mr Dominique de Villepin said yesterday that more than 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) of brush and pinewood had been destroyed in southern France in recent days and urged people to take extra care during the hot, dry summer weather.
More than 600 firefighters battled the flames near the ancient city of Nimes, a local government spokeswoman said.
"There was quite a strong wind pushing the fire forward. We hope the winds will ease during the night," she said.
