Howard Wilkinson has stepped down as manager of the England under-21 team, the Football Association said today.
Wilkinson took over from Peter Taylor, now manager of Leicester City, but could not match his predecessor's successful record, winning nine and losing five of his 16 games in charge.
He will remain as the FA's technical director and will work on the establishment of the new National Football Centre in Burton-on-Trent in the English midlands.
Wilkinson, formerly manager of Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, was twice caretaker manager of the full England side- each time for one match.
