Tennis:  Serena Williams celebrated her return to competitive tennis with a superb victory in the opening round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati.

The American, playing her first match in six months, pounded her way to a 6-2 6-2 victory over second seed Anastasia Myskina.

Williams showed no signs of rustiness, breaking serve twice in each set to make quick work of 2004 French Open champion Myskina.

A seven-time Grand Slam champion, Williams (24) was making a comeback after injuring her left knee at the Australian Open in January.

She has missed the entire claycourt and grasscourt seasons, including the French Open and Wimbledon.

And the prolonged inactivity has dropped Williams - once the women's number one - from 11th to 140th in the rankings.

She now faces Bethanie Mattek, who rallied for a 3-6 6-1 6-2 victory over fellow American Shenay Perry, in the next round.  PA
