Weather: The wintry weather will continue over St Patrick's weekend and today will be cold and breezy with some scattered showers of sleet and snow.
Met Éireann's Jean Byrne said today would be very cold with fresh north to northeast winds. There would be some scattered showers of sleet or snow, although they would not be as widespread as yesterday.
The showers would be mainly in the east and coastal regions and the bulk of the country would be dry, she said, but there would be snow on high ground. "Temperatures will be no more than three to seven degrees so it will be cold in the breezes," she said.
Over the weekend, it would be mainly dry with one or two scattered showers.
The temperature might be slightly higher but it would still be cold and winds would ease, the spokeswoman said. Tomorrow there would be a lot of dry weather with some sunshine at times and a few rain or hail showers here and there, she added.
Sunday, she said, would bring bright spells but some outbreaks of sleet could develop later in the day. It would be very cold on Sunday night. Ms Byrne said that with frost expected at night, roads would be icy. Temperatures could fall to between minus one and four degrees.
The National Safety Council is advising all road users to take extra care over the coming days.
A spokesman said the cold conditions would continue through until tomorrow morning with some snow on roads.
"As a result road conditions could become dangerous. Drivers are urged to drive with care and caution and to expect the unexpected," he warned.
He advised road users to check the local and national weather forecasts before making a journey.
