THE Solomon Gallery in Dublin's Powerscourt Centre opened its exhibition of modern and contemporary drawings last Tuesday, bringing together a superb selection of works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore and Jack B. Yeats. This stupendous line up of great artists attracted an eminent list of visitors including designer Richard Lewis, film censor Sheamus Smith, architect Andrzej Wejchert Denis Sandberg of the American Embassy, Hugo Lambrecht of the South African Embassy, David Palmer of the Independent Group, music critic Ian Fox, award winning set designer Jim Harkin, Mr Paul Bisset, and Dr Paul McQuaid.
Although some of the world's greatest artists were on show, most of the pieces were reasonably priced although the likes of Hockney and Nicholson hovered dangerously close to the £10,000 mark. The works of Picasso, Matisse, Dufy, Moore and Yeats were enigmatically marked POA - price on application, and we politely declined to inquire further.
