Woman (75) knocked down and killed in Laois

A 75-year-old woman was knocked down and killed by a car in Co Laois this morning.

The incident occured at Sentry Hill, Borris-in-Ossory and her body was taken to Portlaoise General Hospital for post mortem.

Her name has not yet been released.

Earlier this morning, a man in his early 20s was killed when he was struck by a lorry in Co Kildare.

Gardaí at Lucan are investigating the incident that occurred at 4.10am on the N4 at the Celbridge Interchange.

The man's body was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, for a postmortem.

Gardaí in Lucan are also investigating a serious hit-and-run on the Lucan Road, close to the Lucan turn off, at 11.30 last night.

A 34-year-old man was seriously injured when he was hit by a car as he crossed the road. The incident happened on the outbound lane.

Gardaí said the car involved may have been red or wine and will have been damaged on the driver's side. Officers have appealed to the driver to come forward or anyone elese who has information. The man is being treated in Tallaght Hospital.

The number of people killed on the country's roads is now over 387. This is 13 more than the total for last year, with another two weeks left in December.

This year has seen the highest road death rate since 2001.
