A woman has appeared in court charged with the unlawful killing of an Offaly woman two years ago.

A woman has appeared in court charged with the unlawful killing of an Offaly woman two years ago.

Agnes McCarthy (54) Castlemaine Street, Athlone, is charged with unlawfully killing Lillian Scanlon at Valley Court, Bonavalley, Athlone, on dates between May 8th and May 9th, 2008.

Ms Scanlon (48), a separated mother-of-three from Clara in Co Offaly, was found dead at her rented home in Valley Court on May 9th, 2008.

Dressed in a blue top and jeans, the defendant did not speak during her brief appearance at Athlone District Court.

Garda Tom Higgins gave evidence of arresting Ms McCarthy yesterday evening.

She made no reply when charged, the court heard.

Gda Higgins said gardaí were willing to consent to bail if she accepted certain bail conditions.

Solicitor Tony McLynn applied for legal aid. He said his client, who is unemployed and has no assets, had an independently surety in court.

Judge David Anderson granted bail on a cash surety of €500. He ordered the accused to sign on daily at Athlone Garda station and to reside at the address provided at Castlemaine Street in Athlone.

She was remanded on bail to appear before Athlone District Court on October 13th.
