A WOMAN has brought a High Court action for damages after claiming her hair fell out as a result of undergoing a colouring treatment at a hairdressing salon.

Aileen Dunleavy alleges her hair was damaged and subsequently fell out after she had it coloured at Hair Republic, Westside Shopping Centre, Galway, on March 28th, 2007. While her hair has grown back, she claims she suffered personal injury and loss as a result of her experience and also alleges it adversely affected her working and social life.

Ms Dunleavy (39), Salthill, Galway, has sued Swanpark Ltd, trading as Hair Republic, Westside Shopping Centre.

Séamas Ó Tuathail, for Ms Dunleavy, said his client, a noted painter who has exhibited at venues including the RDS in Dublin, was very upset as a result of what had happened. He said her hair became brittle and fell out over a period of time following the treatment.

As a result of her injuries, she was unable to work for between 15 and 18 months, he said. She was also unable to take part in an exhibition in the RDS because she did not have the requisite amount of works completed. She became socially withdrawn and did not attend functions, including a First Communion. He said she rejected any suggestion she had contributed in any way to her injuries.

The court heard the defendant accepted the March 28th treatment should not have been administered to Ms Dunleavy as she had the same treatment on March 1st, 2007, but that she contributed to her injuries by insisting on having the treatment on March 28th. The case resumes next week.
