THE FAMILY and friends of a woman killed in a freak incident while she was out walking are this weekend trying to come to terms with her death.
Maura Horgan (57), Ashbourne Park, South Circular Road, Limerick, was critically injured when a large branch that had been sliced off a tree fell on her.
City councillor Joe Leddin said to be killed in such circumstances was appalling.
It happened on O’Connell Avenue in the city shortly after 10.30am on Thursday when a passing truck broke the branch from the tree.
A nurse, who happened to be driving by, tended her at the scene but Ms Horgan died later in hospital.
A retired schoolteacher, she is survived by her husband Michael. A prayer service for her took place at St Enda’s secondary school yesterday, where she had taught Irish for 30 years.
School principal Gina O’Connor said many former staff had come in for the service.
