A 20-YEAR-OLD woman died on Saturday night when the car she was driving went off the road and into a disused canal near the River Boyne in Co Meath.

The woman was taken from the canal by the emergency services, but was pronounced dead on arrival at Navan General Hospital.

The other occupant of the Renault Clio hatchback freed herself and raised the alarm. No other vehicle was involved in the crash.

Four people were injured, one seriously, in a road traffic collision which occurred in Co Clare last night seconds after a fleet of emergency vehicles passed the location on their way to another accident.

The incident happened at Ballyline at the entrance to the local GAA pitch on the main N18 Limerick to Galway road. The collision involved two Peugeot cars travelling in opposite directions.

Two units of the fire brigade from Ennis had been despatched to another collision 10 kilometres away near Lough Cutra on the Clare/Galway border and had only passed the scene of the second incident seconds before it occurred.

Two of the injured were able to get out of one vehicle. The occupants of the second car had to be assisted by fire crews. The injured were taken to Ennis General Hospital where one woman was said last night to be in a "serious" condition. The original crash at Lough Cutra was not a serious incident and the emergency services were not required there in the end.

In Co Dublin, a crash involving a cyclist and a car closed a section of the N11 near Dun Laoghaire at about 7.15am yesterday.

In Rathgar, Dublin, an 85-year- old man died on Friday night in a four-car collision on the Orwell Road. He was named last night as Derek Robinson of Greenpark, Orwell Road. Six people were slightly injured in the crash.
