A 19-year-old woman has drowned in Co Clare after being thrown by her horse into a lake yesterday afternoon. It happened at Lake Doon, near the village of Broadford.
A man nearby raised the alarm and gardaí and locals tried to rescue the woman, believed to be from Wexford.
Her body was discovered just after 5.15 p.m., and taken to the Mid-West Regional Hospital in Limerick. A post mortem will be carried out today.
The Shannon coastguard helicopter was also involved in the search immediately after coming from a successful rescue of two children and two adults off the west Clare coast.
The children were swimming at Doughmore beach, when they got into difficulty but two adults went in to rescue them. The beach is popular with surfers and swimmers but has a reputation for being dangerous and all four got into difficulty.
The children's grandfather raised the alarm. The local coastguard unit, the Valentia lifeboat and the Shannon coastguard helicopter were all involved in the successful rescue.
The four were taken from the water suffering from hypothermia and airlifted to Ennis Hospital by the helicopter.
A spokeswoman for the hospital last night said that all four were fine and were recovering.
