A young woman with no previous convictions has been given a six month suspended sentence by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for handling a stolen county council cheque.

Sgt Declan Smith said he saw Tracey Colliton (22) put the £400 cheque into her pocket while he observed a group of people acting suspiciously in the Grafton Street area on June 1st, 1994.

Colliton (22) of St Theresa's Gardens, Dublin, pleaded guilty to the offence. A co defendant fled the country.

Sgt Smith said the two males with her were "more sinister" people. One of them had the cheque stub in his pocket, he told prosecuting counsel Mr John Whelan. The cheque was from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and was made out to another person.
