British police investigating the discovery of young boy's body at a beach beauty spot in Wales have arrested a woman.

Dyfed Powys Police say the 32-year-old woman, from the Midlands area, was detained in the Carmarthen area.

The boy's body was discovered at Coppet Hall Point, near Saundersfoot, west Wales.

The officer leading the inquiry, Detective Chief Inspector Mel Evans said: "A post-mortem conducted by a Home Office pathologist revealed the cause of death to be drowning.

"Although formal identification of the deceased is yet to take place, it is believed that both the deceased and the detained woman involved originate from the Midlands." He gave no further details.

Police have renewed appeals for information and are particularly anxious to hear from anyone who may have seen an Afro-Caribbean woman with a young child in a push chair in the vicinity of Saundersfoot station or beach sometime between 7.30 p.m. on Monday and 10.30 a.m. yesterday.

The toddler, who is believed to be aged about two, was found by a passer-by among rocks, submerged in water and within view of the picturesque seaside resort. A child's buggy was discovered nearby.

Last night it emerged that a gang of youths with torches were seen by two teenage holidaymakers searching an area of beach where the body was found just hours later. They said at least one of the gang was also described as being of Afro Caribbean origin.

A major air and sea search of the coastline was called off last night after it had apparently failed to turn up any new leads. Coastguard crews and an RAF rescue helicopter had carried out searches of the area in the belief that the child's parents may have also been killed in the sea.
