Police in Britain investigating the murder of Mary-Ann Leneghan said today they had arrested a woman in the west midlands on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Three men were being interviewed by detectives over the brutal murder of the 16-year-old, whose father is originally from Co Mayo.

Mary-Ann and her 18-year-old friend, who remains seriously ill in hospital, were abducted by a gang of six men late last Friday night.

One man was arrested in London and the second in Birmingham within a hour of each other yesterday afternoon, police said. Thames Valley Police are interviewing the pair, along with a 21-year-old man arrested in London on Tuesday.

Police said yesterday's arrests marked a "significant" development in the inquiry.

Mary-Ann and her friend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were dumped in Prospect Park, Reading, Berkshire, on Saturday morning after being subjected to a sex attack which lasted several hours.

Their attackers had driven them to the Abbey House Hotel, in Connaught Road, before dumping them.
