Gardaí in Dublin are investigating an attempted robbery early this morning during which shots were fired at a Dunnes Stores branch in Balbriggan.

At 7.30am two men wearing dark boiler suits attempted to enter the store at Castlemill Shopping Centre while staff were loading a cash machine.

After failing to gain entry one of the men discharged a number of shots into the main doors with what is believed to have been a sawn-off shotgun

A female member of staff suffered minor facial injuries and was brought to Beaumont hospital for treatment.

The men are believed to have fled the scene in a navy five series BMW.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have seen the BMW leaving the scene to contact them at Balbriggan Garda Station on 01-8020510.
