A Tesco shopper had a fortunate escape yesterday when a car-park barrier came through the windscreen of her car, pinning her to her seat.
Gardaí said the woman, who was in her 60s, narrowly missed being decapitated.
The shopper had just completed her shopping at the Tesco store on the Park Road in Killarney, Co Kerry, and was pulling out onto the road when a large steel barrier came crashing through her Suzuki Ignis car.
The barrier entered through the passenger side of the windscreen and exited through the driver's side window.
There was rain and sleet at the time and the area was busy with traffic going into the busy shopping and petrol venue.
The woman suffered injuries to her jaw and neck and was in a state of shock. She was taken by ambulance to Tralee General Hospital. Gardaí at the scene said it was the second such accident in less than a year at the outlet.
Tesco Ireland said last night it would carry out a detailed check on the barrier "to ensure this does not happen again".
The woman was discharged last night from Tralee General Hospital.
