A Galway woman died in hospital from meningitis and septicaemia after her condition had been undetected for a week, an inquest heard yesterday.

The mother of four was taken to a hospital casualty department on two occasions and was also seen twice separately by two general practitioners, the inquest was told.

Mrs Colette Sullivan (46) of Leam, Recess, Connemara, died the day after she was rushed to hospital by ambulance on the initiative of her husband, William. The cause of death was determined as multi-organ failure due to meningococcal septicaemia.

Mrs Sullivan's inquest hearing was resumed yesterday, having opened in Galway on May 29th. A verdict was recorded in accordance with medical evidence.
