A senior RUC officer told a Belfast inquest yesterday the murder of a woman who was found strangled beneath a block of flats three years ago was still a mystery.

Mrs Tina Wardlow (32), a divorced mother of four, had been dead 24 hours before her body was found on January 29th 1993 in the Donegall Road area. The state pathologist, Prof Jack Crane, said she had not been sexually assaulted. He said the woman had been intoxicated at the time of her death and would have been incapable of defending herself.

An RUC detective superintendent said he believed only one person was involved in the crime. The RUC was appealing for witnesses.

Mrs Wardlow, who lived at Bryansford Place, east Belfast, was last seen alive drinking with friends in the "Golden Mile" district in the centre of Belfast two nights before her death. Friends said she went home alone.
