Mr John Bridge, of Bridge McFarland Solicitors, confirmed the woman went to the police before she approached publicist Max Clifford.

He intends to ask the Press Complaints Commission to make a ruling on attempts by newspapers to hint at the women's identity by using pixelated images and an initial.

Mr Bridge said: "She will continue to co-operate with the police and is confident they will investigate the matter thoroughly and in due course it will proceed to trial."

He added: "My client and her young family have been beset in her home. I urge people to leave them in peace and respect their privacy.

"This is not the time or the place for the full story. She has given a full account of the police."

Mr Bridge said his client would not speak to any press and she had not made any deals to sell her story to newspapers. "No such deals have been or will be made," he said.

"Many allegations have been made, many baseless and it is understandable to want to refute such allegations, but she realises she must save her account until it is given and tested in court."

The press conference comes after Mr Neil Hamilton defended the fact that he had been paid to do interviews about the sex assault allegations against him and his wife Christine.

Mr Hamilton told Sky Television the only way the couple have been able to make money is by doing media work. He refused to disclose how much money he had made.
