A woman who smashed a glass into the face of a man in a Dublin nightclub after an argument with his girlfriend has received a 2 1/2-year suspended sentence.

Blβith∅n O'Brien (23), from Tullow Road, Carlow, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to the man on September 15th, 1999.

Sgt Brian O'Connor told the court that O'Brien had been at Faces nightclub in Churchtown with friends but she got involved in an altercation with another woman.

Words were exchanged and the other woman's boyfriend attempted to defuse the argument. He succeeded in doing so but at the end of the night he was approached by O'Brien and struck in the face with a pint glass, missing his eye by an inch. The scar left on his face circled his eye and he still needs medical treatment.
