Women charged over Carlow death

Two women have appeared in court charged in connection with the death of a man in Carlow town last year.

Two women have appeared in court charged in connection with the death of a man in Carlow town last year.

Anne Berry (41), from St Killian's Crescent, Carlow town, appeared before Carlow District Court today charged with murdering Anthony Riordan (37) at his home at Barrow Mills, Graiguecullen, Carlow on June 5th, 2009.

Sally Casey, with an address at New Street, Green Road, Carlow, was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Riordan and with production of an article during the course of fight on the same date.

Mr Riordan, who was originally from Coolock in Dublin, was discovered by gardai with stab wounds to his body shortly after 2am. He was taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny where he died later that morning.

Garda Mathew Phylan, of Carlow Garda Station, gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution of both women.

When the charge of murder was put to her, he said Ms Berry replied: "I didn't mean to do it".

Garda Phylan said that when charged Ms Casey replied: "What can I say…I didn't use the knife on him".

The court heard the book of evidence would be ready in six weeks.

Ms Berry was remanded in custody to appear before Carlow District Court on May 5th, 2010.

Ms Casey was granted bail and is to appear before Carlow District Court on June 9th.
