Two women died in separate house fires over the weekend. At 2.30 a.m. yesterday Ms Eileen O'Sullivan (83), Market St, Bantry, Co Cork died in her home when a fire broke out. The fire was confined to her bedroom. Her son, also living in the house, escaped uninjured. Gardai say the fire was not suspicious.

On Saturday night Ms Aileen Carville (60) died when a fire started at her home in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath. The fire started at about 8.15 p.m. Ms Carville was living alone in the private quarters of a bank in the village square. Gardai are not treating the fire as suspicious.

Meanwhile, gardai in Dublin are seeking assistance in identifying the body of a man taken from the Grand Canal on Friday.

He was taken from the canal at 1 p.m. at Portobello Bridge, Rathmines. He was in his mid-20s and is described as 5ft 2in, medium build with brown hair and green eyes. He was wearing brown trousers, black shoes and a Seiko wristwatch.
