Gardaí in Co Clare said two elderly women had a lucky escape yesterday when a wheel from a lorry smashed through a livingroom window.

The freak accident happened at the same spot where a pensioner was killed in a crash in May, which also badly damaged the wall of the house.

Gardaí in Killaloe said the accident happened at around 2pm at Ballyhane Cross, near Birdhill, on the main Limerick to Dublin road.

A wheel came off a passing lorry and bounced through the front gate before smashing through the livingroom window, narrowly missing the occupants.

Gardaí said the two - a woman in her 80s and her daughter in her 60s - were "extremely lucky" to escape injury.

The wheel was still lying in the front garden of the bungalow yesterday afternoon and the window had been boarded up.

One of the women said yesterday that they were too traumatised to talk about their ordeal but it is understood they were extremely angry following the second serious road accident at their home in recent months.

In May an 81-year-old man was killed in a traffic accident which demolished part of the garden wall of the house.

"The women were very shaken after their ordeal but they were also quite angry because they feel that something should be done," a Garda spokesperson said.

Gardaí at Killaloe confirmed yesterday that they had made contact with a lorry driver who was travelling in the Dublin direction shortly after the incident.
