Two women in their early 20s are lucky to be alive today after a hit-and-run incident in Co Kildare early this morning.

The women were knocked off their bicycles near Barberstown on the Clane-to-Celbridge road between 6.10am and 6.20am. The driver did not stop.

A Garda spokesman said the women were thrown into a ditch by the impact and were unable to see what kind of vehicle was involved or see the driver.

"Maybe somebody has turned up with broken headlights or acting a bit nervous and somebody will notice something," the spokesman said.

"Or maybe a garage has been asked to fix a car and notices something unusual. They [the women] could have been killed."

Both cyclists were taken to Naas General Hospital with serious injuries, including broken bones, although these are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardaí are looking for anybody who may have witnessed the incident or who may have any information to contact Celbridge Garda Station
