Under the EU-backed, Women in Electronics programme, 19 women were presented with certificates at Tallaght Regional Technical College yesterday. The women, aged 30 to 50, were previously unemployed and 18 of them have been hired-by the US computer multinational Hewlett-Packard for its new plant in Leixlip, Co Kildare.

Tallaght RTC and Hewlett-Packard designed the course, which includes basic electronics, computers, maths and manufacturing technology. The college has three other similar programmes for women in electronics, run with Hewlett-Packard, Intel, NEC Semiconductors and Motorola.
