As part of Trinity College Dublin's celebrations to mark the centenary of the admission of women to the university, this summer's recipients of honorary degrees are all women.
Today's conferring ceremony honours the achievements of seven women who have made remarkable contributions in the worlds of law, science, sport and the arts.
Among the best known Irish recipients is Ms Garry Hynes, who is being awarded a Doctor in Letters for her considerable work in the arts.
A co-founder of the Druid Theatre Company, she was appointed artistic director of the Abbey Theatre in 1990 and was the first woman to receive a Tony award for her direction of Martin McDonagh's play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane.
Another Irish woman being honoured is the renowned Dublin poet, Ms Eavan Boland. A graduate of Trinity, she has worked as a literary journalist with The Irish Times and RTÉ and is a co-founder of the publishing company, Arleen House.
Judge Fidelma O'Kelly Macken is being awarded an honorary Doctor in Laws for her achievement as the first female judge to be appointed at the European Court of Justice.
The other recipients of a Doctor in Laws are Dame Mary Peters, Dr Alison Elliot OBE and The Hon Hilary M. Weston.
Dr Shirley Ann Jackson, a distinguished American physicist, is to receive a Doctor in Science.
