Golf:Tiger Woods has confirmed he will compete in the British Open at St Andrews in July. The 34-year-old will aim to become the first player to become a three-time Open champion in Scotland after his victories in 2000 and 2005.
Organisers had been confident Woods would compete at the event from July 15th-18th and the American confirmed on his website last night it was on his schedule.
The world number one, triumphant at St Andrews by eight shots in 2000 and by five in 2005, returned to the game at The Masters last month after five months out because of a sex scandal.
Woods has played in three events in all but was forced to pull out of the Players’ Championship a little over a week ago with an injury which was later diagnosed as an inflamed joint in his neck.
He had also been planning to defend his title at the June 3rd-6th Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio but that event is still up in the air while he continues to heal an inflamed facet joint.
While he gave no hint as to the timing of his return to the PGA Tour, Woods said last week he expected to make a full recovery.
"I now need to take care of this condition and will return to playing golf when I'm physically able," the 34-year-old said in a statement.
Woods added that the injury would be treated through physical therapy, soft-tissue massage, rest and anti-inflammatory medicine.
