Work to combat sectarian tensions by turning derelict land on the west Belfast "peaceline" into business units got under way today.

The International Fund for Ireland (IFI) is supporting the £373,340 scheme to create additional workspace at Lanark Way.

New units totalling 5,920 square feet will provide accommodation for two new businesses or additional space for established businesses wishing to expand but remain in the area. The development has the potential to create at least 10 jobs.

IFI chairman Denis Rooney said: "Much of the land on the peaceline has lain derelict for many years and many organisations on both sides of the sectarian divide have been working to promote economic development activities as a means of breaking down religious barriers and contributing to a more peaceful and stable society.
