Construction of the first regeneration housing project on the south side of Limerick city has got under way.
The Southill older persons’ accommodation complex is only the second building project under the regeneration programme launched for Limerick five years ago.
Despite more than €100 million being spent on the project – most of it on the demolition of 900 houses – only two developments are now under construction.
The first project, a 33-unit development at Cliona Park, Moyross, is nearing completion.
Five months after it took over responsibility for the overall regeneration programme, the new Limerick Local Authority signed contracts and work has begun on the €5.6 million, 35-unit retirement complex at Carew Park in Southill.
It will comprise 22 two-bedroom and 13 one-bedroom apartments. There will also be a guest unit for relatives and a community room for social activities. The homes are scheduled for completion in late autumn of next year.
