SIPTU's construction branch has called on the Minister of State, Mr Tom Kitt, to call an urgent meeting between employers and unions to seek an end to the "carnage" on building sites.
This follows an accident in Strand Street, Dublin, yesterday morning, when a Co Meath man in his 30s fell four storeys.
Mr Eric Fleming, the secretary of SIPTU's construction branch, said the man was taken to hospital with severe injuries, including a broken pelvis. He added that the number of accidents on building sites was completely unacceptable and said Mr Kitt would have to act.
"Fatal accidents have stood at 14 in the construction business for a number of years", Mr Fleming said. "But so far this year we have seen 13, including the two men killed in Co Kildare last week."
