World's marine experts gather in Dublin

Marine experts from all over the world will be in Dublin Castle today for the Marine Institute's 10th Anniversary Conference.

Marine experts from all over the world will be in Dublin Castle today for the Marine Institute's 10th Anniversary Conference.

The conference runs for three days and will examine aspects of the marine industry including renewable energy, sustainable fisheries, global climate change, marine leisure and marine environment and biodiversity.

The aim of the conference will be to identify how Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and the Marine Institute can help and facilitate the future development of a sustainable aquaculutre industry in Ireland.

The conference also aims to examine the impact and value of marine research and development over the past decade and discuss how to take marine research further.

One of the highlights of the conference will be the release of a consultation document on the potential of wave energy in Ireland. The process is due to begin next week and will run until February 2003.

The Marine Institute was established in 1992 and employs 150 in Dublin Galway and Newport.
