British prime minister David Cameron called the European Commission president-designate, Jean-Claude Juncker, to congratulate him on “running a successful campaign and securing” the nomination of the European Council at Friday’s meeting in Brussels.
Last night, Downing Street said the two had discussed how they would work together to make the EU more competitive and more flexible, while Mr Cameron welcomed Mr Juncker’s commitment to find “a fair deal for Britain”.
In reply, Mr Juncker said he was “fully committed to finding solutions for the political concerns of the UK”.
