A man has been charged with attacking a 24-year-old Irishman in Liverpool city centre, who remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Merseyside Police said the man was found with a head injury in an alleyway between Fleet Street and Seel St in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 19-year-old man is to appear in court on Monday, charged with assault. A second man arrested in connection with the attack has been released without charge.

The as yet unnamed Irish victim was discovered in an alleyway near to the Walkabout bar and Level nightclub with serious head injuries.
