A Florida woman who had a 14.1lb baby has revealed she did not know she was pregnant until her third trimester.

Maxxzandra Ford gave birth naturally to her son, Avery, just over a week ago, according to officials at St Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in Tampa.

They said the baby is the heaviest born at the hospital, and one of the largest-ever born in the state.

The baby’s mother said that after rapidly gaining weight last autumn, doctors confirmed she was 35 weeks into her pregnancy.

She said she initially thought she was having twins.

The heaviest baby ever born, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, was 22lb and was born in Canada in 1879.

That baby's mother, Anna Bates, had giantism and her baby died 11 hours later.

The heaviest baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 22 lb 8 oz who was born to Carmelina Fedele at Aversa, Italy in September 1955.
