A four-year-old girl has died after being shot in what police say was a road rage incident in New Mexico.

Authorities are searching for a suspect after the shooting on Interstate 40 in Albuquerque on Tuesday afternoon.

The girl was rushed to hospital, but later died.

Her parents, who were also in the car, escaped injury.

Police say it is not immediately clear what may have led the incident on the city’s west side to escalate.

A Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputy arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting, and found the child inside the vehicle.
